The Scylla Demo's
In 1995 I was lucky enough to be the road manager for Scylla Toni Halliday’s post Curve project. We spent the summer touring around the UK playing small clubs and Toni stipulated that her name be kept off of any advertising posters for the gigs, it was all very low key. They were a great band, Lindy Pocock, Fiona Lynsky on guitars, Julian Bown on drums, Ricky Barber on bass and Toni on vocals of course.
At the end of the summer they went into the studio to record some demo’s for a possible album, and that’s as far as the band went, shortly after completing the demo’s Toni decided to knock the whole thing on the head, which was a great shame as I thought they could have been a very successful band.
So all that was left were these 12 tracks recorded with the help of Toni’s husband Alan Mulder and their good friend Flood, 2 of the worlds top record producers, not bad for a bunch of demo’s.
Luckily I got a copy of them on cassette, unfortunately it wasn’t the best copy as it had been recorded a little too hot and had very slight distortion on it, but it was still very listenable to, and that was as far as it went, the cassette got lost in my large collection of tapes and sort of forgotten for ten years. And then recently having a bit of a clear out I came across it again and had a listen and was struck by how good it really was and decided to transfer it to CD. I wondered if it had ever been released at all and after a fruitless search on google realised that it was known about, but no one had actually heard any of the tracks apart from Helens Face, which was used in the film showgirls. So I decided for historical and musical reasons it was time people got to hear this great music.
If this music ever gets a proper release then I will shut down the site I set up for these downloads and go out and buy the CD, which I hope you will as well.
